We all want to feel good about ourselves and our bodies, right? This thing that we exist in day in and day out, that eats, craps, shakes, feels, gets us from point A to point B, etc. You’d think that because of how physically connected we are to our body (we can’t escape it), we would be closer to it emotionally, treating it as a living being as opposed to a mere shell. Having a healthy relationship with your body in which you take the time to tend to it and admire it for what it does, more so than how it looks, can make all the difference in your sex life. Having a healthy relationship with your body is key to achieving the pleasure you desire and deserve. Since at the end of the day – for as long as we’re here – our body stays with us, here are 5 ways to get to know your body better:
LOOK AT IT.
Look at your body in the mirror. Look at it naked, in underwear, in lingerie, or anything that exposes the lines and curves it makes, the rolls and dimples it has, and accept them. Allow yourself to be fascinated by your body – the different shapes it makes, the strength it has, the fact that it keeps you alive – instead of maybe wishing it were something different. Like Lena Dunham recently said, “I’ve accepted that my body is an ever changing organism, not a fixed entity.”
Get the blood flowing in your body – nothing is better for you. Find a hobby you enjoy that gets your body moving and take advantage, whether it be yoga, dance, running, swimming, whatever! Any activity that makes your body work and that makes you sweat will have ongoing benefits for your physical health, sexual health AND pleasure. A healthy blood flow helps make orgasms more frequent, more intense, and last longer, FYI.
This may seem awkward at first if you’re not used to doing it, but masturbating is so important for your mind-body connection, self-esteem and confidence. If you’re not used to masturbating, start by grazing your fingertips over different parts of your body, like the inner thighs, stomach and sides, and pay attention to the different sensations it creates. Your body will surely come alive when you give it the attention it craves and remind you of how extraordinary of a being it is.
Whether you’re into fashion or not, putting effort into dressing your body in a way that makes you feel good about yourself should never be overlooked. There are so many different types and brands of clothing out there to choose from – whether it be vintage, consignment, mainstream, commercial, thrift – that come in all different sizes and price tags. Don’t let the idea of fashion intimidate you – dress however you want to, create your own style, and feel good about the clothes – and skin – you’re in.
ASK ABOUT IT.
If you have questions about your body and want to learn more about it, that’s great! All you have to do is ask a doctor, peer, parent, friend or professional, and you’ll get the answers you’re looking for, or at least one step closer to them! Knowing about the different parts of your body and their functionality is so important, and unfortunately not always taught. There’s no reason to ever feel shame in asking questions, being curious, and waiting to learn more. As we know, being informed means being empowered and that’s what it’s all about!
Until next time, stay shameless.
